About Evronim

EVRONIM is a multilingual termbase created as one of the results of the process of preparation of the Serbian version of the EU acquis, which also becomes a vital tool in that process. The main idea behind the creation of this collection is to establish a unique terminology in the Serbian language covering a range of areas, which, on the one hand, will make the job easier for acquis translators, and, on the other, will be useful for a wide scope of other users, as their permanent and reliable source of reference.

The process of preparation of the national version of the EU acquis includes multiple stages: translation, expert, legal and language revision. These are also the stages every term goes through, which ensures that each term in the base represents the best possible solution at a given time, as well as a good and verified choice.

Given that the EU acquis regulates a vast number of areas, the terminology found in these legal texts, as well as in this base, originates from various sciences, disciplines, and areas of human activity in general. Therefore, Evronim contains general lexis, general terminology lexis, legal terminology, and terminology specific to other areas, as well as a certain number of the most common phrases and fixed phrases. Each term entry includes the subject area it belongs to.

Each term entry refers to a unique concept. Therefore, sometimes, formally identical term can be found in two entries, with different translation and/or subject area. On the other hand, one entry can contain synonyms, i.e. two or more terms that have the same or similar meaning within a given subject.

Furthermore, since the majority of EU legal acts is translated from English (EN), each entry contains the term in English, its translation into Serbian (SR), and equivalents in other languages, if possible and deemed applicable and useful for comparison or better understanding. In addition to English, official languages of the EU present in Evronim are the following: Bulgarian (BG), Czech (CS), German (DE), Greek (EL), Spanish (ES), French (FR), Hungarian (HU), Italian (IT), Polish (PL), Romanian (RO), Croatian (HR), Slovak (SK), and Slovenian (SL). The base also contains terms in Latin (LAT).

In addition to the term itself, which is given in two or more languages, one entry can contain the following data:

Creation Date date when the term was first entered into the base
Change Date date when the last change was made to the term
Entry Number number of the term in the termbase
Project project within which the term was translated
Subject EN subject area the term comes from (in English)

Source Language language from which the term was translated

2 – term that is used but has not been confirmed in the stages of expert and legal revision
3 – term that has been confirmed and recommended by expert and/or legal revisers
4 – verified term (from primary legislation)

Hypernym superordinate concept compared to the concept the term represents

All the above leads to the conclusion that EVRONIM is a unique termbase, which is not your usual online dictionary (it is both more and less than that). It is closely related to the process of translation of the EU acquis, and as the process moves forward, the base itself will improve, change, adjust and upgrade.
